Definition of cubit (UK) unit

The cubit (UK) is a traditional unit of length equal to 18 inches, or 1.5 feet (0.4572 metre). It was based historically on the distance from an adult’s elbow to the tip of the middle finger.

History of cubit (UK) unit

The cubit is among the world’s oldest linear measures, appearing in Egyptian, Mesopotamian, Hebrew, Greek, and Roman contexts. Its name derives from the Latin cubitum, meaning elbow. Unlike the standardized Egyptian royal cubit, ordinary cubits varied with local custom and bodily measurement. In Britain, the cubit became conventionally associated with 18 inches, probably through medieval and later antiquarian usage. It was never a principal statutory English measure, however, and gradually disappeared from commerce as feet, yards, and metric units gained official preference.

Applications of cubit (UK) unit

Today, the UK cubit is chiefly encountered in historical writing, biblical studies, archaeology, museum interpretation, and educational material about traditional measurement. It can describe approximate dimensions in old buildings, artifacts, or texts, but it has no legal commercial status. Modern conversions generally treat one UK cubit as 0.4572 metre, or eighteen inches.
