Definition of statohm centimeter unit
The statohm centimeter is a centimeter–gram–second (CGS) electrostatic unit of electrical resistivity. It represents a material resistance of one statohm for a conductor one centimeter long and one square centimeter in cross-sectional area.
History of statohm centimeter unit
The statohm centimeter emerged from the electrostatic CGS system developed in the nineteenth century, when physicists defined electrical quantities through centimeter, gram, and second units. Its parent unit, the statohm, measured resistance in the electrostatic formulation and was related to the electromagnetic ohm through the square of the speed of light. Although useful in theoretical work and older literature, CGS electrical units proved inconvenient for engineering. The international ohm and SI system therefore displaced the statohm centimeter, leaving it mainly as a historical or conversion unit.
Applications of statohm centimeter unit
Today, statohm centimeters appear chiefly in historical references, legacy scientific tables, and conversion software handling CGS data. They may describe extremely high resistivities when older electrostatic measurements are compared with SI values; one statohm centimeter equals approximately 8.99 × 109 ohm meters. Modern laboratories instead report resistivity in ohm meters or ohm centimeters.
