Indicative calculations assume a fixed interest rate and level repayments. Fees are shown in the estimated total cost, not as interest. Rounding may affect the final pennies.

How Interest Rate Tool Works?

The interest rate is inferred from the loan amount, the regular repayment, repayment frequency, term and any final balloon payment. Let P be the loan principal, A the repayment per period, B the final balloon, n the number of repayments and r the interest rate per repayment period. The number of repayments is the rounded product of the term in years and the selected repayments per year.

For payments at the end of each period, the present-value equation is:

P=A×1−(1+r)−nr+B(1+r)n

For repayments at the beginning of each period, the annuity term is multiplied by (1 + r), while the balloon remains discounted to the end. At a zero rate, the present value is A × n + B. The tool solves the equation numerically for a non-negative periodic rate.

If f repayments occur each year, the effective annual rate is:

EAR=(1+r)f−1

The displayed nominal annual rate is derived from this effective rate using the selected quotation compounding frequency m, or a continuous-compounding equivalent when selected:

jm=m×((1+EAR)1m−1)

For continuous compounding, the equivalent annual quoted rate is ln(1 + EAR). The fee-inclusive effective annual borrowing cost is estimated by resolving the same present-value equation with net proceeds P minus the upfront lender fee and each repayment increased by the fee per repayment. It is an estimate rather than a jurisdiction-specific statutory APR.

The schedule can be grouped by repayment or year, and the chart shows either the outstanding balance or the principal-versus-interest pattern. Results are displayed in the selected currency: USD, GBP, EUR, CAD, AUD, NZD, INR, PKR, AED or JPY.

Practical Use Cases

Personal loan borrowers: Enter a quoted loan amount, fixed repayment and term to estimate the implied interest rate before deciding whether an offer is affordable.

Car buyers: Include a final balloon payment and any lender fees to understand how a lower regular repayment may change the eventual borrowing cost.

Mortgage shoppers: Compare fixed repayment scenarios with monthly or fortnightly payments and inspect the yearly balance and interest breakdown.

Small business owners: Examine a proposed equipment finance agreement, including upfront fees and recurring charges, and export the detailed repayment schedule for planning.

Financial advisers and educators: Demonstrate the difference between a nominal quoted rate, an effective annual rate and a fee-inclusive borrowing-cost estimate, including the impact of repayment timing.

Accuracy and Limitations

Results use a fixed periodic rate, equal scheduled repayments and an optional final balloon; the solver searches only for non-negative rates. Repayment counts are rounded to whole periods, rather than based on dated cash flows or actual day counts. Fees affect the fee-inclusive effective rate but not the contractual amortisation balance. The displayed nominal rate depends on the selected compounding convention, and the fee-inclusive rate is not necessarily a legally defined APR. Variable rates, introductory offers, irregular payments, payment holidays, taxes, insurance, early-settlement charges and lender-specific rounding rules are not modelled. Amounts displayed to two decimal places may differ slightly from underlying calculations; for JPY, displayed amounts use no decimal places.

Frequently Asked Questions

A nominal rate states an annualised rate under a specified compounding convention. An effective annual rate includes the effect of compounding over the year.

A longer repayment period or a large final balloon may reduce regular repayments while increasing interest paid over the life of the loan.

It is a larger lump sum due at the end of a borrowing agreement, in addition to regular repayments.

They increase the effective cost of obtaining and repaying the loan even when the stated interest rate remains unchanged.

All else equal, earlier repayments reduce the balance sooner and can lower interest costs compared with repayments at the end of each period.
