How Brexit Calculator Works?

The Brexit Calculator estimates the customs value, duty, import VAT, handling fees, total landed cost, euro-denominated landed cost, and effective additional charge rate for a UK-EU shipment. Select the trade direction, then enter the goods value, shipping cost, insurance, duty rate, VAT rate, handling fee, and GBP-to-EUR exchange rate. The trade direction provides context, while the calculation uses the entered rates and costs.

First, the calculator adds the goods value, shipping, and insurance to determine the customs value:

Customs Value=Goods Value+Shipping Cost+Insurance Cost

Customs duty is calculated by applying the entered duty percentage to the customs value:

Duty Amount=Customs Value×Duty Rate100

The VAT tax base includes the customs value, customs duty, and handling fee. Import VAT is then applied to this base:

VAT Base=Customs Value+Duty Amount+Customs Handling Fee
VAT Amount=VAT Base×VAT Rate100

The remaining outputs combine these calculated amounts:

OutputCalculation
Total Taxes and FeesCustoms Duty + Import VAT + Customs Handling Fee
Total Landed CostCustoms Value + Customs Duty + Import VAT + Customs Handling Fee
Total Landed Cost in EurosTotal Landed Cost × GBP-to-EUR Exchange Rate
Effective Additional Charge Rate(Total Taxes and Fees ÷ Goods Value) × 100

The effective additional charge rate shows how much the estimated taxes and fees add relative to the original goods value. For example, the default inputs produce a customs value of GBP 1,090 from GBP 1,000 of goods, GBP 75 of shipping, and GBP 15 of insurance. With a zero duty rate, 20% VAT, and a GBP 15 handling fee, the VAT base is GBP 1,105 and the estimated import VAT is GBP 221.

Practical Use Cases

UK importers can estimate the customs duty, import VAT, broker or courier handling fee, and total landed cost when purchasing goods from EU suppliers. This helps businesses set selling prices and assess whether an overseas supplier remains commercially competitive.

EU importers can use the calculator to model the expected cost of bringing products from UK sellers into the EU, including shipping, insurance, customs duty, VAT, and clearance charges.

UK exporters can estimate the cost impact faced by EU customers when shipping products from the UK, helping them decide whether to offer delivered pricing, support customs charges, or communicate likely additional costs.

EU exporters can assess the likely landed cost for UK customers receiving goods from the EU and use the result when preparing quotations, delivery policies, or cross-border sales forecasts.

Online shoppers can enter the product price, delivery cost, insurance, applicable rates, and handling fee to estimate the amount payable beyond the advertised goods value before placing a cross-border order.

Freight forwarders and customs brokers can use the calculator as a preliminary budgeting tool when discussing shipment costs with clients, while replacing the estimates with shipment-specific classifications and official declarations during clearance.

Accuracy and Limitations

The calculator is an estimate based entirely on the values and percentages entered by the user. Its accuracy depends on using the correct customs duty rate for the product classification and origin, the applicable destination VAT rate, complete shipping and insurance costs, and a current GBP-to-EUR exchange rate. It applies one simplified formula to every trade direction and does not determine tariff classification, preferential origin, duty relief, VAT registration treatment, low-value thresholds, product-specific exemptions, destination-country rules, or additional carrier and regulatory charges. Actual customs assessments may therefore differ from the displayed results.

Quick Examples

Estimate the landed cost of goods imported from the EU into the UK with customs duty, VAT, handling fees, and currency conversion.

Example #2: EU Import from the UK

Calculate taxes, fees, and total landed cost for a business importing UK goods into the EU.

Example #3: Low-Value UK Export

Assess the additional charges and converted landed cost for a lower-value shipment exported from the UK to the EU.

Frequently Asked Questions

Import VAT may apply when goods enter the UK or EU, depending on the destination, shipment type, exemptions, and the applicable tax rules.

The importer is generally responsible for paying customs duties and import VAT, although the seller, courier, or customs broker may collect these charges on their behalf.

Businesses should consider the goods price, shipping, insurance, customs duties, import VAT, brokerage fees, handling charges, storage, and possible currency conversion costs.

Yes. Actual charges can change because of customs classification, origin documentation, exchange-rate movements, carrier fees, inspections, or changes in tax and trade rules.
