How PayPal Fee Calculator Works?

The PayPal Fee Calculator estimates the total transaction fee, the amount received after fees, and the gross payment needed to reach a desired net amount. Enter the transaction amount, the applicable percentage fee rate, and the fixed fee charged per transaction.

First, the percentage rate is converted from a percentage into a decimal:

r=PayPal fee rate100

If A is the transaction amount, r is the decimal fee rate, and F is the fixed fee, the percentage portion of the charge is A × r. The total PayPal fee is:

PayPal fee=A⁢r+F

The net amount received is the original transaction amount minus both fee components:

Net amount=A−(A⁢r+F)=A⁢(1−r)−F

To calculate the required gross payment, the calculator treats the entered transaction amount as the desired net amount, represented by T. Solving the net amount equation for the gross payment G gives:

Required gross payment=G=T+F1−r

For example, with a transaction amount of 100, a 2.99% fee rate, and a fixed fee of 0.49, the estimated fee is 3.48 and the net amount received is 96.52. If the goal is to receive 100 after fees, the required gross payment is approximately 103.58.

CalculationFormulaExample result
Decimal fee rate2.99 ÷ 1000.0299
Total PayPal fee100 × 0.0299 + 0.493.48
Net amount received100 − 3.4896.52
Required gross payment for a 100 net amount(100 + 0.49) ÷ (1 − 0.0299)103.58

Practical Use Cases

Online sellers can enter the expected customer payment and their applicable PayPal rate to estimate the processing cost and determine how much revenue will remain after the transaction.

Freelancers can use the required gross payment result when sending invoices, helping them charge enough to receive their intended project fee after the percentage and fixed charges are deducted.

Small businesses can estimate transaction expenses for individual sales, compare expected net proceeds across pricing options, and improve sales-margin calculations.

Digital product creators can calculate the payment needed to preserve a target payout when selling downloads, memberships, templates, or other digital goods through PayPal.

Nonprofit and community organizers can estimate how much of each contribution remains after the entered PayPal fee structure, supporting more realistic fundraising targets.

Accuracy and Limitations

The calculator is mathematically accurate for the transaction amount, percentage rate, and fixed fee entered, with results generally displayed to two decimal places. Its estimates are limited to the fee model supplied by the user: it does not automatically verify PayPal's current rate or account-specific pricing and does not include additional charges such as cross-border fees, currency-related charges, micropayment pricing, refunds, disputes, or account-specific adjustments. The required gross payment formula also cannot produce a finite result when the fee rate is 100%, so a rate below 100% is necessary for gross-up calculations.
