Coffee Calculator
Calculate coffee dose, brew ratio, servings, and estimated caffeine based on water, serving size, brew strength, and coffee type. Coffee Calculator helps home brewers, baristas, and café teams prepare consistent coffee more efficiently.
Highlights
- Calculate the ideal coffee dose based on your water amount and preferred brew ratio.
- Choose from strong, rich, balanced, standard, or light coffee strengths.
- Estimate servings based on your total water and serving size.
- Get estimated total and per-serving caffeine for Arabica, Robusta blends, or decaf.
- Convert measurements between mL, liters, fluid ounces, cups, grams, and ounces.

How Coffee Calculator Works?
The Coffee Calculator uses the selected brewing water amount and coffee-to-water ratio to determine the recommended coffee dose. The ratio is expressed as water parts to one part coffee, so a 15:1 ratio means 15 units of water for every 1 unit of coffee.
The available ratios adjust the brew strength:
| Ratio | Strength label | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| 10:1 | Strong | Uses more coffee for the same amount of water. |
| 12:1 | Rich | Produces a fuller coffee concentration. |
| 15:1 | Balanced | Provides a middle-ground brew strength. |
| 16:1 | Standard | Uses slightly less coffee than the balanced setting. |
| 17:1 | Light | Uses the least coffee among the available settings. |
Estimated servings are calculated by dividing the total brewing water by the selected serving size.
The caffeine estimate starts with the calculated coffee dose and applies a reference caffeine value associated with the selected coffee type: Arabica, Robusta Blend, or Decaf.
Finally, the estimated caffeine per serving is found by distributing the batch total across the estimated servings.
The calculator reports the recommended dose in grams or ounces, caffeine in milligrams or grams, servings as a count, and the selected coffee-to-water ratio for repeatable brewing.
Practical Use Cases
Home brewers can enter the amount of water in a pour-over, French press, or batch brewer and select a ratio such as 15:1 or 16:1 to obtain a repeatable coffee dose and serving estimate.
Baristas can use the calculator to scale a recipe for different batch sizes while keeping the same coffee-to-water ratio and checking the estimated caffeine per serving.
Café managers can estimate how many portions a batch will produce and compare coffee requirements for strong, rich, balanced, standard, or light brew profiles.
Event and office planners can enter a large water amount and intended serving size to estimate total servings and the approximate caffeine available across the batch.
Decaf drinkers can select Decaf to receive a caffeine estimate based on the calculator's decaffeinated-coffee reference value rather than the Arabica or Robusta Blend estimate.
Coffee educators can demonstrate how changing the ratio affects the required dose while keeping the brewing water and serving size fixed.
Accuracy and Limitations
The coffee dose and serving calculations are mathematically consistent with the entered water amount, selected ratio, and serving size, but caffeine values are estimates based on the calculator's reference factors for Arabica, Robusta Blend, and Decaf. Actual caffeine can vary with bean variety, roast level, grind size, brewing method, contact time, extraction efficiency, and the specific coffee product. The serving result is also an approximate portion count when the water amount is not an exact multiple of the selected serving size, and the calculator does not account for water retained by the grounds or other brewing losses.
Quick Examples
Example #1: Balanced Home Brew
Prepare a balanced batch of Arabica coffee for several standard servings.
Example #2: Strong Café Batch
Calculate a rich, stronger brew using a larger volume of water and a Robusta blend.
Example #3: Light Decaf Coffee
Plan a lighter decaffeinated brew for a small number of individual servings.
