How Perimeter Calculator Works?

The Perimeter Calculator finds the total length around the outside boundary of a selected two-dimensional shape. It applies a shape-specific formula to the dimensions you enter and returns the result in the selected length unit.

P=∑side lengths

The available formulas are:

ShapeRequired inputsPerimeter formula
SquareSide AP=4a
RectangleSide A and Side BP=2(a+b)
TriangleSide A, Side B, and Side CP=a+b+c
CircleRadiusP=2πr
ParallelogramSide A and Side BP=2(a+b)
TrapezoidSide A, Side B, Side C, and Side DP=a+b+c+d
Regular polygonNumber of sides and Side AP=na

For a regular polygon, n is the number of equal sides and a is the length of each side. For example, a rectangle with sides of 5 m and 3 m has a perimeter of 2(5+3)=16 m.

Practical Use Cases

Students can use the calculator to check geometry exercises involving squares, rectangles, triangles, circles, and regular polygons, while comparing each result with the corresponding formula.

Designers can estimate the boundary length of panels, layouts, circular features, and regular shapes when planning borders, trims, or decorative outlines.

Builders can calculate the perimeter of rooms, slabs, plots, and other basic plan shapes to estimate edge treatments, fencing, or material requirements.

Engineers can quickly verify boundary-length calculations for standard two-dimensional components before incorporating them into drawings, specifications, or further design calculations.

Landscapers can determine the perimeter of garden beds, paved areas, lawns, and other defined spaces when planning edging or boundary materials.

Accuracy and Limitations

The calculator uses the exact standard perimeter relationships for the seven supported shape types and accepts positive side or radius values from 0.0001 to 1,000,000, with regular polygons limited to 3 through 1,000 equal sides. Results for circles depend on the calculator's numerical value of π and may be displayed with rounding. It does not determine missing dimensions, validate whether supplied triangle sides satisfy the triangle inequality, infer trapezoid geometry, or calculate perimeters for irregular polygons and curved shapes other than a circle.

Quick Examples

Example #1: Rectangle Perimeter

Calculate the boundary length of a rectangular garden plot.

Example #2: Circle Perimeter

Find the circumference of a circular table.

Example #3: Regular Hexagon Perimeter

Calculate the perimeter of a regular hexagonal tile.

Frequently Asked Questions

Perimeter is the total distance around the outside edge of a two-dimensional shape. It is expressed in linear units such as meters, centimeters, feet, or inches.

Add the lengths of all four sides, or use the formula P = 2(length + width). Opposite sides of a rectangle are equal.

The radius is the distance from the center of a circle to its edge. The diameter spans the circle through its center and is twice the radius.

All dimensions should be converted to the same unit before adding them. The final perimeter will use that same linear unit.

Students, landscapers, builders, designers, engineers, and homeowners use perimeter measurements for borders, fencing, trim, layouts, and material estimates.
