Definition of Jaz 1GB unit

The Jaz 1GB is a removable magnetic-disk storage unit developed by Iomega, representing a cartridge with approximately one gigabyte of capacity. It stores digital data on rigid magnetic platters inside a protective, portable enclosure.

History of Jaz 1GB unit

The Jaz system was introduced by Iomega in 1995 as a higher-capacity successor to the company’s popular Zip disks. Early Jaz cartridges commonly held 1GB, a substantial amount for that period, and used removable rigid magnetic platters rather than flexible media. A SCSI-based external drive was initially the typical interface, followed by parallel-port and other variants. Jaz gained attention among musicians, businesses, and backup users, but its relatively high cost, mechanical fragility, and competition from recordable optical discs and emerging hard-drive technology limited long-term adoption. Iomega released a 2GB version.

Applications of Jaz 1GB unit

Jaz 1GB cartridges were used for transporting large project files, archiving multimedia, backing up workstations, and exchanging data between compatible computers. They were especially useful in professional graphics, publishing, audio, and engineering environments before inexpensive high-capacity hard drives, USB flash storage, and cloud services became widespread. Today, they are mainly collectible legacy media.
