Zip 250 Unit Converter

Definition of Zip 250 unit

Zip 250 is a removable magnetic-disk storage format introduced by Iomega, providing 250 megabytes (MB) of nominal capacity per cartridge. It uses a compact, rigid disk enclosed in a protective shell and accessed through a compatible Zip drive.

History of Zip 250 unit

The Zip 250 format was developed by Iomega as the successor to its original 100 MB Zip system and introduced in 1998. It increased cartridge capacity while retaining the familiar removable-disk concept and backward compatibility with many Zip drives. The medium gained attention among home users, students, and professionals needing more portable space than floppy disks offered. However, the format arrived as recordable CDs, CD-RWs, and later USB flash drives became increasingly affordable. Iomega eventually discontinued Zip products as optical and solid-state storage replaced them.

Applications of Zip 250 unit

Zip 250 cartridges were used to back up personal files, transfer large documents, archive photographs, distribute software, and transport project data between computers. Graphic designers, offices, and home users valued their portability and greater capacity than floppy disks. Today, they are mainly encountered when accessing legacy archives, recovering vintage data, maintaining older equipment, or collecting historical removable-media systems.
