Definition of base-14 unit
Base-14, or tetradecimal, is a positional numeral system that uses fourteen digit values, 0–9 and two additional symbols, commonly A and B, representing decimal ten and eleven. Place values are powers of fourteen.
History of base-14 unit
Base-14 has no known inventor or universally documented ancient tradition. Like other positional systems, it can be described mathematically through powers of a fixed radix, with notation developing alongside studies of number systems. The name tetradecimal comes from Greek roots meaning “four” and “ten,” although terminology varies. In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, educators, mathematicians, and advocates of alternative bases discussed it as a reform to decimal notation. Its use has remained limited, appearing mainly in theoretical writing, puzzles, and speculative proposals rather than commerce or science.
Applications of base-14 unit
Today, base-14 is used chiefly in mathematics education, recreational puzzles, and discussions of alternative numeral systems. Numbers are written with 0–9 plus two extra symbols, often A and B; for example, 10₁₄ equals decimal 14, while 100₁₄ equals 196. It has no significant role in ordinary commerce, programming, engineering, or scientific measurement.
