Definition of base-35 unit
Base-35 is a positional numeral system, or radix-35 notation, that represents numbers using thirty-five digit values: 0–9 and twenty-five additional symbols, commonly letters A–Y, where each position represents a power of 35.
History of base-35 unit
Base-35 has no single ancient inventor or universally standardized historical alphabet. It is a modern extension of positional notation, whose principles developed through place-value systems in ancient India and the later adoption of Hindu-Arabic numerals. In contemporary computing and mathematics, designers have sometimes selected radix 35 for compact identifiers, puzzles, benchmarks, or specialized encodings. Since digits beyond nine require symbols, implementations commonly use letters, although case, excluded characters, and digit ordering vary. Consequently, base-35 is best understood as a practical notation rather than a historically fixed measurement unit.
Applications of base-35 unit
Today, base-35 may encode compact IDs, database keys, coupon codes, test data, and puzzle answers when a nondecimal representation is useful. For example, decimal 35 is written as 10₃₅, while decimal 100 becomes 2U₃₅ if A=10, B=11, and so forth. Software must document its symbol alphabet and case rules for reliable conversion.
