Definition of dram [dr] unit

A fluid dram (fl dr) is a small unit of liquid volume. It equals 1/8 fluid ounce: approximately 3.696 milliliters in the US customary system and 3.551 milliliters in the Imperial system.

History of dram [dr] unit

The dram originated as a subdivision of the Greek drachma, a weight used in classical Mediterranean trade and medicine. Over time, the term entered European systems of measurement and acquired both mass and liquid-volume meanings. In Britain, the fluid dram became one hundred and sixtieth of an Imperial pint, or one eighth of an Imperial fluid ounce. The United States later standardized its customary fluid dram as one eighth of a US fluid ounce. Because ounce sizes differ, the two modern fluid drams are not identical.

Applications of dram [dr] unit

Today, the dram chiefly appears in pharmacy, historical recipes, and traditional drink measurements. Apothecaries once used the fluid dram to describe medicine doses, although modern practice relies on milliliters. In cocktail and beverage contexts, recipes may specify a dram to indicate a very small pour, but users should verify whether US or Imperial standards are intended.
